The second week of each month we publish the Seattle Startup Index (SSI), the list of all Seattle-based (and vicinity) technology startups ranked by their traffic according to Alexa and Compete data. We forgot to notice the date, but in March the SSI had its 2nd anniversary. There are a lot of good and bad things from the SSI. The good thing is that it became a staple of the Startup community showcasing the most popular consumer web services. The bad thing is that it doesn’t add much value to all the great startups that are enterprise, hardware, mobile or even Facebook apps. But still, we get more praises than hate emails every month, so we keep it going and improving it.
For this month, on the top 10 ranked startups on the list, Pet Holdings (the makers of I Can Has Cheezburger and Failblog) continue to be second to Zillow. The interesting change is BuddyTV that jumped from #5 to #3, displacing both iLike and Picnik.
We continue to see a strong startup activity in Seattle with 9 new startups on the list: PressPlane/Inkd (the company from Kelly Smith of Curious Office), AppStoreHQ (from Chris Devore of Founder’s Co-op), Enjoymentland/Locavore (by Buster Benson, one of the 43 Things/Robot Co-Op founders), Attassa, DoulaMatch, DanceHop, Empty Space Ads, FasterXML, and MVP Teams.
Big gainers on the top 100 include: Jobvana (#60) moving 18 positions, Gist (#64) moving 23 positions, LoudLaunch (#70) moving 25 and Zooppa (#94) moving a stunning 54 spots!
On the Top 50, the largest drop is Pelago, down 7 positions to #37. On the top 100 the largest drop is Jambool down 26 to #68.
If you are the founder or executive of a technology startup in Seattle that is not listed you can submit your startup and we’ll add to the Index next month.
(The title of this post is an inside joke that STSers will appreciate)
